Why is the IVF method used?
IVF method can be used to treat infertility problem in the following patients:
- Blocked or damaged fallopian tubes
- Male infertility including decreased sperm count or sperm motility
- Females with ovulation disorders, premature ovarian failure, uterine fibroids
- Females who have had their fallopian tubes removed
- Individuals with a genetic disorder
- Unexplained infertility
What is involved in the in-vitro fertilization method?
- There are five basic steps in the process:
Step 1: Fertility medicines are prescribed to stimulate egg production. Multiple eggs are needed because some eggs will not develop or fertilize even after retrieval. To examine the ovaries, a transvaginal ultrasound is used, and blood samples are taken to check hormone levels.
Step 2: Eggs are collected through a minor surgical procedure that uses ultrasound imaging to guide a hollow needle through the pelvic cavity to remove the eggs. Medicine is provided to decrease and remove potential discomfort.
Step 3: The male is requested to provide a sample of sperm, after which it is prepared for combining with the eggs.
Step 4: In a process called insemination, the male sperm and female eggs are mixed together and stored in a laboratory dish to encourage fertilization (forming embryo). In some cases where there is a lower possibility of fertilization, intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) may be used. Through this procedure, a single sperm is injected directly into the egg in an attempt to achieve fertilization. The female eggs are then monitored to confirm that fertilization and cell division are taking place. Once this is done, the fertilized eggs are considered embryos.
Step 5: These embryos are then transferred into the woman’s uterus three to five days following egg retrieval and fertilization. A small tube called a catheter is inserted into the uterus to transfer the embryos. This procedure is usually painless for most women, whereas some may experience mild cramping. If the method is successful, implantation typically takes place around six to ten days following egg retrieval.
What are the risks associated with in-vitro fertilization?
Unlike most medical procedures, there are potential risks in the IVF procedures too. Further severe symptoms, typically from OHSS, include the following:
- Nausea or vomiting
- Decreased urinary frequency
- Shortness of breath
- Faintness
- Severe stomach pains and bloating

As per the name “Test Tube Baby,” they are not developed in a test tube. They are not a part of the current and modern IVF process.
In this process, the infertile woman is under medication via drugs and injections until the time mature eggs are produced.
These mature eggs are then removed from the ovary and kept in-vitro or in a test-tube. Further, the eggs are acquainted with healthy and high motility sperm taken from the father or from a donor.
The fertilization takes place inside the glass test tube within 2-3 weeks of time. This whole process is carried out at the Test Tube Baby center in Wakad managed by the expert hands Dr. Nilesh Balkawade.
The fertilized eggs or embryos are then transferred back into the uterus of a mother or a female for further development. The assurance of treatment being successful depends on a woman’s age and weight.
